Enlightenment - Linux desktop of the future
March 15th, 2005
Update (11/2005): If you came here wondering where the hell has enlightenment.org gone - Read Enlightenment.org is Dead
Note: So you wouldn't need to bother with reading the next few lines -
Here are screenshot 1, screenshot 2 and the AMAZING CLIP.
Enlightenment - I think I've completely forgot about this one..
It was once one of the most popular windows manager for Linux.
For a time it was even bundled with GNOME.
Enlightenment was what people talk about when saying "Linux eye candy", and I'm sure it has set the bar for windows managers for years to come..
However, for some reason, it kind of declined.. GNOME moved to MetaCity, KDE has its own stuff - And, yes, I completely forgot about it.
It's still here, and has always been. I know many people are still using it - But I guess the lack of "buzz" around it is due to 2 major facts:
1. There was no major release for 3 years - When this happens, there's nothing to feed the buzz.
The Enlightenment team state on their site that this is the case because they are working on providing the best available product, and won't release a "half-assed" version.
The team has actually rewrote the code in order to have it nice and optimized.
And yes, it doesn't just look awesome, it's FAST!
2. As GNOME and KDE grew with leaps and bounds, the major distributions kind of dropped Evolution from their default installation.
Enlightenment might be available as a component, or via downloading a package, but it can't be as popular as when being featured as an integral part of the OS.
Anyhow, Enlightenment is still here - And it's amazing!
I've just stumbled upon a video showing DR (Development Release) 17 - Which is under works and unstable yet.
Check this out - Is this amazing or what?
I'm sure this is the direction desktops are going to. And it rocks.
Can't wait for Enlightenment to reach maturity and be a viable Linux windows manager.
I'm hoping this excellent piece of software won't be vaporware, ever in development.
I'm it will reach maturity and be released.
And when it does, I'm sure it will become the new standard for desktops
