A few interesting Linux tidbits I found
August 17th, 2005
I’ve gathered a few cool little tips for Linux for the past few days, waiting to collect enough to bundle them in a single post…
All of them were posted recently on Debian-Administration.org.
I chose these specific ones because:
1. They looked cool and interesting
2. They are geared to tutor beginner/mid level Linux users
3. They are not Debian-specific but general Linux tips.
An introduction to run-levels - This one is a must if you want to use Linux. Determine what exactly loads on boot, WHEN to load, load with X or without etc. Really important stuff.
Analyzing boot performance with bootchart - To be honest, I’ve never tried this before. Sounds interesting though…
Unattended, Encrypted, Incremental Network Backups - I’m always interested in learning how to backup my Linux PC. Probably because, contrary to my XP PC which I know inside-out, I’m a little worried of getting lost if anything goes wrong with my Linux PC.
Fancy Bash Prompts - This is one of the things I always loved to play around with.
The veterans amongst you may recall 4DOS - I used it A LOT in the old DOS days. One of the things I played with most was the command prompt.
So naturally when I’ve started playing around with Red Hat Linux 5.2 one of the first things I’ve learned is how to do cool things with the Linux prompt…
