How to open or convert .odt (OpenOffice) files in Microsoft Word?

If a friend or colleague sends you a document and you receive an .odt file, you quickly discover it cannot be opened with Microsoft Word.
.odt is the default file format of documents written in the OpenOffice.org equivalent of Microsoft Office. OpenOffice does have the ability to “Save As” regular .doc Word files, but many people tend to save as the default .odt.
Anyhow, if you have such an .odt file you want to open with Microsoft Word. The best solution would be to use the excellent online file converter: Media Convert.

Excelent. Alternatively one can download OpenOffice.org from their website free of charge and have it at hand.

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!! I love you - you are my hero of the day! I am a writer and when my own pc phizzed out on me, I used my son’s laptop to work on my novel… Open Office read my Word files just fine, so I naturally thought (though why, knowing Microsoft, I’m not sure), I was sure MSWord would return the favour. But, NO…after checking the help files and MS on line help, I finally resorted to Google and got your WONDERFUL site…Re: simply going with OpenOffice and turning my back on MSWord…well, I’m not ready to do that yet - though I do see the value. Most webpages I looked at for help rudely told me I should be using OpenOffice, but you graciously gave an elegant solution.

I tried you program on line and found it not what I wanted to covert my odt file to doc files and be able to read it. your program did not do that compleatly.
