I was waiting for this for a long time, just an hour ago Google held a press conference and finally revealed the Google Chrome OS details.
To be honest I wasn’t blown away. It was pretty much what I expected.
It’s still interesting and cool. And for better or worse, that’s the direction technology seems to go.

Gmail finally out of Beta. After 5 years.

Wow, while the previous post about the Google OS is certainly a million times more important, I was actually more surprised by this one from Google: After 5 years of being labled as Beta, Gmail is finally officially out of Beta.

Actually the whole Google Apps suite, which Gmail is part of, is finally out of Beta. Obviously Google is working hard to replace Microsoft as the new giant. Let the games begin..!

Years of rumors were true: Google announces Google Chrome OS

All of us have heard many rumors for the last 5 years or so. Google are secretly developing an operating system that would rival the other giant in the playing ground (MS).

So now it’s finally official: The Official Google Blog has posted today a post titled Introducing the Google Chrome OS. It’ll be out next year.

Read the whole thing. No one knows how the future will shape up following this. However, let me guarantee you one thing, this announcement is a huge one and in any case we’ll see an interesting few years of struggles and power shifts between MS and Google.

Now You Can Change What Google Says About You

A very interesting new feature released by Google. ReadWriteWeb writes:

Today Google released a product, called Google Me, that aims to change all of that. For a price – though not a monetary one.

Starting today, searchers who enter only the word “me” in the search box will be given an opportunity to set up or edit their Google Profile.

When someone searches for a name that matches a Google Profile, that profile may now be displayed at the bottom of the search results page.

A lot of poeple have reservations, and rightfully so, of providing too much personal information to Google. I personally belive that the secret is the middle road, of doing everything in a rational and moderate way, rather than choosing one of the exterems. What I mean by that in this case is that I’m happy I’m able to create a Google profile for myself, yet I keep the most private stuff (Phone numbers etc) to myself and didn’t give them to this Google application. Google Chrome out of Beta – Officially released!

Google just announce that Google Chrome is out of Beta an is officially released!

I don’t think I remember Google taking any product out of Beta. Gmail is in Beta for how long now? And here, after a short 3 month period Chrome is officially out.

My theory is that Google really wants to push this one hard, and they figured a lot of people are hesitant to download and use such a major component while it’s still defined as “Beta”.

But you know what the funny thing is? It worked with me! I’m now downloading and installing Chrome for the first time. Great idea Google!

GMail Adds Themes

Slowly but safely Gmail is getting closer and closer to be the mail client of choice for a lot of people.
For me at least, that’s true, as more and more of my personal email transactions are getting done on Gmail.
I still open up Outlook, but nowadays it’s really mainly for archiving. (Call me a paranoid, but I still don’t trust anyone else but myself to backup the years of email messages!)

Another cool new feature Google revealed today is Theme Support!

GMail for Mobile v2.0 released

The Official Gmail Blog has announced a couple of days ago that Gmail for Mobile 2.0 was released.
It’s a must have app on your cell phone, and it’s definitely the most used app on my Nokia N95.

Version 2.0 is designed to be more reliable in low signal areas and provides basic offline support for phones like the Nokia N95, Sony Ericsson W910i, and BlackBerry Curve. You can now log into multiple accounts (including both Gmail and Google Apps email accounts) at the same time. Switching between them is as easy as a few button clicks or just hitting + j on phones that have a QWERTY keyboard. Google also added support for multiple mobile drafts, undo (using the menu or the z shortcut), and sending mail in the background (no more staring at the “Sending…” dialog until it finally gets sent). Be sure to check the help page from Gmail for mobile’s main menu for a list of all keyboard shortcuts.

Google Maps Israel

While everyone is going crazy about the new Google browser that was released to Beta today (Google Chrome) – Google actually released something a lot more exciting for me today.
This news item can easily be overlooked, but its a big deal for us Israelis.

Google has FINALLY released today the proper Hebrew version of Google Maps. This means we can finally use Google Maps for navigating in Israel, and even in Hebrew.
YAAAAY!!!

Gmail: Check Email from your other accounts!

Uh Oh, Gmail Just Got Perfect!!!

Although reported back in last December, this has only been activated globally today:

Mail Fetcher allows users to access non-Gmail email accounts from within the Gmail interface. If you have a Yahoo email account, and a work email account, etc., you can simply access that email from within Gmail, using POP settings. Gmail will now work in a very similar way as Outlook does on the PC desktop.

Simply go to the Settings screen, then Accounts, simply configure the Get mail from other accounts option.
Just as simple as that.
Gmail is now truly fantastic!
